Galvanized Coil White Rust: Shipping and Storage Checklist for Buyers
White rust, or storage stain, can develop when moisture remains between closely contacting galvanized surfaces with restricted air circulation. For coil orders, agree moisture protection, compatible surface treatment, dry storage and arrival inspection before shipment. Packaging or passivation alone is not a guarantee against damage.

Why a wrapped galvanized coil can still develop storage stain
GalvInfo describes direct water entry and condensation as potential moisture sources between coil wraps. A package that appears intact is therefore not proof that its contents have stayed dry. Treat the shipment route and receiving conditions as part of the purchasing discussion, rather than treating the word “wrapped” as a complete protection plan.
Ask the supplier to describe its proposed packing and surface treatment, then ask your receiving team whether its equipment and storage arrangements can handle that proposal. Keep the response with the material schedule so the dispatch and receiving teams are working to the same record.
Put these questions into the packing section of your RFQ
The following is a buyer-created coordination checklist. It is not a universal packing specification: the actual arrangement must suit the coil, route, handling equipment and agreed requirements.
| Topic | Question to resolve before dispatch | Evidence to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture protection | What wrapping and transport protection are proposed for this route? | Written packing description and dispatch photographs |
| Surface treatment | Is the proposed treatment compatible with the intended downstream process? | Confirmed treatment description and any required restrictions |
| Handling arrangement | Can both ends safely handle the proposed coil orientation and package? | Coil dimensions, mass and receiving-equipment confirmation |
| Identification | How will each package link to the material records? | Agreed coil IDs and package marking list |
| Storage and arrival | Who checks arrival condition and where will the material be held? | Named receiving contact and condition-report procedure |
| Exceptions | What happens if damaged wrapping or moisture is found? | Notification contact, evidence requirements and review process |
Specify surface treatment without turning it into a warranty
GalvInfoNote 3.2 discusses protective treatments for galvanized sheet and explains why storage conditions still matter. Ask the supplier to identify the treatment actually offered. Where painting, bonding or other downstream processing is planned, have the responsible technical team confirm compatibility instead of accepting a generic request for “maximum protection.”
Keep the treatment approval separate from the coating designation and steel grade. A commercial line saying “treated GI coil” leaves several decisions unresolved. Put any prohibited treatment, required information or approval hold point in the order record so it is visible before material is released.
Prepare an arrival-condition record before the truck arrives
An original receiving checklist can be short: record the delivery reference, arrival time, coil IDs, visible package condition and any observed moisture or staining. Take an overall photograph and close views that retain enough context to identify the affected package. Record what is observable; avoid diagnosing the cause from a photograph alone.
If moisture or damaged protection is found, notify the agreed contact promptly and request a documented handling and assessment plan. Do not simply rewrap wet material and return it to routine storage. GalvInfo warns that wrapping wet sheets traps moisture; coil-specific recovery and handling should be agreed with the supplier and qualified personnel.
Coils require suitable lifting and restraint arrangements. This checklist does not instruct a receiving operator to cut bands, rotate a coil or uncoil material for inspection. Use approved site procedures and equipment, and agree how an assessment can be performed safely.
Example: report an observation rather than an assumed defect
Consider a hypothetical delivery with a torn outer wrap and a damp patch. A useful message is: “Package C-07 arrived with a tear beside the upper edge and visible moisture on the outside. Photos and the delivery reference are attached. Please confirm the next inspection steps and whether the package should be held pending review.” This preserves evidence without claiming that the entire coil is damaged.
The same approach applies to discoloration: record its location and appearance, then obtain an assessment against the order requirements. GalvInfoNote 6.1 distinguishes moisture-related storage stain from fretting associated with relative movement during transport. Colour alone should not decide a claim, cleaning method or acceptance decision.
Before placing a SKSTEEL coil order, send the destination, proposed receiving arrangements and any packing or treatment restrictions with your material schedule. Agree the open logistics questions while they can still be included in the offer.
Questions buyers ask
Does passivation make a galvanized coil waterproof?
No. Protective treatment can reduce susceptibility to storage staining, but it does not replace suitable protection, storage and handling. Confirm the treatment and its downstream compatibility.
Is every dark mark on galvanized steel white rust?
No. GalvInfo describes both storage staining and fretting marks. Record the condition and obtain an assessment rather than diagnosing the mechanism from colour alone.
Should I immediately unwrap or uncoil a wet delivery?
Obtain a supplier-agreed assessment and handling plan using qualified personnel and approved site procedures. Do not improvise coil handling or remove restraints for a casual inspection.
